iPhone UI critique

Some day this year I'll be able to comment on this more. (The iPhone is not out in Switzerland yet and I am waiting for version 2 before I buy one, yadda, yadda, etc.)

For now, here's an interesting discussion about the iPhone user experience and the way its apps display information:

graphpaper.com - Edward Tufte’s iPhone

It will be interesting to see what kind of user experience third party apps will offer when the official SDK is released.

Blackberry patents

CNN and others report about a patent dispute that may spell trouble for all Blackberry service users.
Here are some of NTP's patents:
6,317,592
5,438,611
5,479,472
5,631,946

I first heard about this case in a Pizzeria in St. Anton a few weeks ago where I was talking with a guy (didn't ask his name) who is in the IT Patents business. It didn't really filter through to me before because I don't have a Blackberry or comparable device at the moment. I may actually be looking for a mobile solution soon though because I'll be away from my laptop more and at the same time will need more frequent email access.

Business Week online has several long articles about the case.

Logic Express update 7.1.1: problems with M-audio FireWire 1814 fixed?

After a quick test with the Logic Express update 7.1.1 it seems that it won't crash anymore when used with M-audio 1814.
The description of the update says that 'Realtime sample rate conversion' is an area that this update addresses. I suspect that that was causing the problem since the M-audio control panel shows a sample rate of 48000 Hz and Logic Express was set to record at 44100 Hz.

AppleInsider about upcoming Mac OS X Tiger: Audio recording in QuickTime player!

Inside Mac OS X Tiger build 8A323: "...Meanwhile, Pro users now have access to record audio and video through the QuickTime player...."

(Via AppleInsider.)

This is interesting! New possibility for easy Podcast recording!

Griffin Earjams' pads great for fitting Apple In-Ear headphones too!

Apple's In-Ear headphones are supposed to be better than the earphones that come with your iPod. I got them for the added quality and also to block the noise of the city during my commute. It is just impossible to hear what podcasters are saying in normal city noise! Because the earphones are designed to go into your ear canal, they also function as earplugs.

That is: if you can get them in!

Apple supplies 3 sizes of pads to fit your ears. Our ears are so different that there is a rather large chance that none of them really fit! This is not something they advertise of course. It is so common that there are specialized companies that will produce custom molds for other (high-end) In-Ear earphones like the Etymotics.

So my problem was, left ear: no problem, right ear: none of the supplied pads worked! The earplug would always fall out and not produce the sound it was supposed to.

Griffin Earjams to the rescue :-)
I saw the Griffin Earjams in the store. Pretty cheap. Since I still had some normal earbuds at home and wondered how it would sound I decided to buy them. It also seemed just by looking at the pads (the little rubber rings around them) that they are pretty similar in size to Apple's. Just shaped a bit differently.

It turns out Griffin's rubber pads fit on Apple's In-Ear headphones as well!

I now have the small size pad of the Earjams on the earphone in my right ear and the medium size pad in my left ear. Much better! It really sounds great and I can actually move my head without the earphones falling out.

Back from vacation: iChatting with my niece

Just back from vacation in Austria.
My sister, niece and brother in law are visiting my mother in The Netherlands. They are over from Long Island, New York where they live. Unfortunately I was not able to go to The Netherlands to see them.
iChat to the rescue!

This is what it looked like from the other side:

Note that my sister is using the iSight camera off it's holder. That sometimes causes the image to get all blocky but it's great for following the little girl around.
Now let's hope they get a proper broadband connection at home soon! (Still using dialup at the moment.)

Mac Os X Multi user audio routing

Interesting tidbit about Mac Os X's audio setup: it is possible to have one audio mapping setup for one user (input and output setting in the System Preferences) and a completely other one for another user and have them active at the same time.

Example
User 1 logs in.
Plays song A in iTunes.
Output is set to USB audio device A.
Switch to User 2 (With Fast User Switching).
Set the system output to 'Headphones'.
Play Song B with iTunes.

Now Song A plays through the USB device, Song B plays through the headphones.

Audio Blog software studio setup

Here is my proof of concept for a software-only studio setup for shows like Trade Secrets or The Daily Source Code.

1. The proof of concept from my PowerBook Studio: ABlogSoftwareStudioSetup.mp3 [6.2 MB, 5:21 minutes]
2. ..and how a participant hears it: OtherSideABlogSoftStudio.mp3 [3.1 MB, 5:21 minutes]

A participant is someone who 'calls in' to the show using an audio chat program. Playing back the second file I heard that the participant's part was missing. This is somewhat logical because what the participant says should go to the other side of the chat and should not be played back locally. However, I was routing all audio from my 'studio' back to the participant. This means that iChat probably has a mechanism to filter out anything that originates locally.

More on the technical details of this setup in a later post.

BBEdit 8: Still doesn't suck

Version 8.0 is the biggest update to BBEdit since 6.0, four years ago.

[Daring Fireball]

I still have to get used to it a bit but do appreciate the improvements.
Handling very large files is still very slow though! Haven't been able to figure out why.

Links for Erik

Some links I promised to send to my friend Erik who is an Electronics/ IT Geek among other things:
Slashdot article about Hardware Hacking.
But this story about the Linksys NSLU2 is the actual example I mentioned.

And now for something completely different: In-ear headphones.
My boss has the Etymotic Research ER-4S. Says they are great, especially for airplane flights.
I have the Sennheiser HD25-1s. One advantage of them is that people actually see that you're wearing headphones and should not be surprised to notice that you can't hear what they're saying. (Although, surprisingly, a lot of people are!)

Last but not least: Great Hackers!

Did I forget anything?

Quicken quickly

Triggered by the need to get a grip on my finances I bought my bank's own version of Quicken.
First impression: positive! UI takes some getting used to but it's not all illogical and very rich. Importing all transactions from my bank over the internet was a snap. Categorizing the bulk of them took only about an hour. (For about 700 transactions over a 3 year time-period.)
Now I can get a quick overview of where my money goes. (A bit of a shock!)
Unfortunately, the version I got is Windows only. Next step is to look into the Mac version and see if it's possible to switch between the two.

Airport Express: as advertised

Almost immediately after it was announced I ordered 3 AirPort Express thingies.
They work as advertised, connecting (bridging) two wired networks in different parts of the house and allowing my flatmate and me to stream music to the living room.
Unfortunately one of the three broke after only five minutes: I removed it from an electrical outlet, heard a couple of sparks and now it doesn't do anything anymore :(
Now I'll have to figure out how to get it replaced. (Ordered through the Applestore online.)
PS Peter, I didn't know you're an Apple enthusiast?
